Also, this experience was a surreal introduction into how people browse the internet. I used to use my Flickr stats page constantly (before the recent-ish revamp) and on the one occasion that the Flickr blog posted one of my photos the effect was palpable. Views on the photo in question, sure, but cascading views out in each direction in my photostream. Adds of me as a contact. Favorites galore.
In contrast, when this picture hit Reddit I had views pouring in by the thousands and barely a single favorite, and negligible views in either direction in my photostream. It was like a drive-by counter-incrementing, and over within a few hours.
Maybe a year later imgur really hit the big time and now I don't think photos hosted on other sites even make the front page anymore.

I get the motivation but it also rewards the public tendency to lift pictures without attribution, so I don't really like it either.
