I sold my house this past summer. It had an ancient propane hot water heater that vented into the wall. "Not okay" said the inspectors and I couldn't really blame them. So I needed a new heater but people were quoting me $800-1200 to get one and have it installed. However one of the teachers where I work had a spare one from some home renovations he'd done and didn't need it. He had offered it to Hurricane Irene victims but no one had needed it. He gave it to me.

Now I don't have a pickup truck and wasn't sure how to get it from where I lived to where my house was, about an hour away. So I got my friend Phil to drive it there in exchange for the old cupola that had been on top of the barn in a former life (and some computer help).

The water heater guy needed a laptop. I do a lot of freebie-ish laptop help for my landlady who keeps saying BILL ME but I feel weird about billing her since it's not that hard to help her out. However, she just got a new laptop which means a bit more time than usual setting it up and teaching her how to use it. So, I sent her a "bill" but said that if she wanted, I'd just take her old Macbook off her hands for her.

She thought that sounded like a great idea, and I gave the laptop to the guy who gave me the water heater. Cycle complete!
