Share of commuters who walk or bike to work in the 50 largest U.S. cities, 2009-2011 average
When I was in Boston I was one of the bikers, now in San Jose I am sitting on my backside on a train....
@krautwald I meant to say something before ... US cities generally have terrible terrible bike infrastructure. Seattle is kind of an interesting anomaly, because many people consider the weather unpleasant for cycling, and it's very hilly, so that number probably reflects people who are fairly close to, eg, a university, and have relatively short commutes — that said, it's quite an outdoorsy population (I grew up there). San Francisco, near the top, has only so-so bike infrastructure — a thought-out bike path plan (with middling implementation) but still most bike access is between parking and road traffic, so it can be a very dangerous place to ride.
Size matters way less than the high probability of being doored or being sideswiped by some asshole / person texting.
