The irony is that the Onion slapped an overlay ad over the article that I had to close in order to read their humorous piece on overlay ads.

I once made Yahoo.com spotted like a dalmatian so that Disney could run banners that said “Dog On It, Click On It.”

That ad campaign would sink Metafilter like a rock.
