@joost Wow, indeed! Looks like there's a discussion over on MetaChat about whether to shut down -- due to lack of activity, in that case.
MetaFilter was the first online community I joined, in August of 2001, after being a reader of blogs and personal sites for years. Several years later, tired of the arguing and realizing that I spent more time in MetaTalk than in blue threads, I decided to shift over to the new MetaChat, which promised to be more positive and less serious. I was very active for a couple years, then faded away as Gapers Block (my now-shuttered news site) continued to grow. Then I joined MLKSHK for the fun of picture-sharing in a place more community-oriented than Twitter.

Yeah, that sounds familiar. I was on mefi too. Until it got too activist for me.
And then I found mlkshk. That reminded my of the time when mefi had images. And threads would be filled with people just goofing off.
Recently I've been wondering whether it was wise to hang out on US forums so much. I'm in the Netherlands myself so there's no spin off to IRL. The experience is a bit unreal.
