Varying stripes, oil
alt text
After working up this sketch last night https://mltshp.com/p/1BECF I grabbed a biggish canvas and a yardstick and penciled out guidelines to take a stab at it with oil paint. Spent this afternoon getting this far with cerulean blue; after this spends a week or so drying I'll come back with cadmium orange to fill in the negative space.
My buddy Jesse has been meeting with me on Monday's lately to do art, and is helpfully holding up the canvas here.

My process in this case depends on that assumption, anyway; if I'd wanted just blue on white, I'd have done a white coat on the whole canvas to get a more bright and even coverage on the white spots and take a little bit of the rough toothy bite out of the canvas itself, to make it easier to apply the blue on top evenly.
As is, the lines look pretty good at a distance here but are uneven in lots of little spots. (Which is an okay choice aesthetically but not what I'm after this time.) Knowing I'm making further passes with another color meant I could let that happen without losing my mind, relying on cleanup as I lay more paint on rather than getting everything perfect on the first pass.
I've got some other related ideas I may work on in this vein too, so there'll probably be more than one go at this and I'll likely handle each differently.
because it really is!
