for tools
@jonson You have a good point, but while they've diversified color options for tool boxes (the pink one is branded "The Original PINK BOX", the green one "VIPER Tool Storage"), all the tool boxes but the pink one tout any equipment features (capacity, drawer types, toughness, security), and upsell marketing materials.
So there's an assumption that people who are attracted to pink toolchests will not be interested in functional advantages and are not expected to buy tools. Even if it's not explicitly sexist, it's implicitly condescending towards a selected market attracted to a conventionally polarizing color option.

Since the internet can be confusing re: sarcasm, I should clarify I'm not being sarcastic, and that what you describe is actually legit shitty behavior.
I have that red toolbox. I wish when I'd bought it I had other color options. Seriously there is a sniggering intern behind the PINK BOX appellation.
@jessamyn I have a cheaper version of it... I would like to eventually replace it with a much bigger one, because it doesn't hold All The Tools and that has lead to less organization, rather than more. And yeah, they can't have been naive about the name.
@jonson It's cool. You're good folks.

@ardgedee I got mine at a Sears dent-n-ding sale and it was stupid cheap for how nice it was and how long it's lasted. Highly recommend the biggest one you can afford.
It's called the PINK BOX?? Jesus Christ that irks me. I know more about cars than almost every man I know and have to put up with bullshit like this not just from dudes at the store but from the goddamn tool box now? I've got a pink box for them, alright! [angry crotch grab]
I thought it was a play on Fairly Odd Parents cartoon

For comparison, did you see the pink one and instantly think "That's so homophobic! As if gays wouldn't buy a toolbox unless it was painted pink!" I think color on its own is fair game. It's the "Hey ladies! At last a toolbox for YOU!" marketing that is shitty.
