@waldopepper It looks to me like the drivers are aware of the pedestrian and accommodating them, so i'd expect they'd do the same for slower walkers that are doing the same.
I've been much more assertive lately when crossing roads on foot - not quite like this, but i rarely wait for a long break in traffic to step out. The law (here in MN anyway) is that a driver must stop when you're crossing at an uncontrolled intersection, but they generally won't if they don't have to. At least in my neighborhood, drivers seem to be getting better about watching for pedestrians, but assertiveness really helps.
No joke. I recall Hanoi making this look tame. At that time traffic was 95% scooters though, and that's sort of the point, in that scenario you just steadily, deliberately cross the street and let traffic flow around you. A scooter hitting a pedestrian will make them fall off and fuck them up just as much as you, so the stakes are even.
This mixed traffic in the clip of scooters, motorcycles, cars and buses though... uh... good luck
I just remembered that one of the most striking things about all the scooter traffic in Vietnam was that almost every single one of the drivers and passengers wore helmets. It was uncanny compared to the States, where helmets are often considered optional, regardless of the law.
I came to the conclusion that the only way every single person would choose to wear a helmet was because it was just too dangerous without one.
