My dad had a 9090 (110W RMS) when I was a kid. Combined with some big Altec-Lansing speakers, I distinctly remember bass that felt like being kicked in the chest, and pictures falling off the walls.
Still has the receiver, though it needs work (goes into protection). The Altecs are long gone, he managed to melt the voice coils.
Grew up with a Sansui 350A at home. My dad keeps saying he'll send it to me, along with a Garrard turntable. I love the illuminated dials on vintage tuners.
@paulpalinkas I have umm... well, more vintage amps than I have ears. It's still possible to find great old equipment cheap, although it's not as easy or as cheap as it used to be.
I'll jump on this "my Dad had one" train: a 6, 7 or 8, I don't recall which. Paired with some funky, smallish, not great speakers that were a bit redeemed by being solid koa wood and looking beautiful. Gave up the ghost about 15 years ago, but after close to 20 years of service. I can still feel the "clunk" of those buttons.
@paulpalinkas For all that I enjoy my small-footprint, snob-appeal-y Scottish separates, you've hit on one of the intangibles that makes me miss Dad's big ol' Jap box: that illuminated dial glow. I miss that glow.
