I would appreciate an article or otherwise to help educate me, @SquidInSquidInk. I find it hard to read the more childishly crass cartoons of turbaned men as intelligent satire. Particularly given the atmosphere of racism and frequent mistreatment of Muslim immigrants in France.
this is good

As far as the actual cartoon, I'm not really in a position to explain the context (don't read French, etc.), but it's my understanding that they've usurped the style from right-wing bigots and the like. They also mock all religions and other groups with political power, especially bigots and the right, and have given column space to ex- and left-leaning- (not just moderate) Muslims who otherwise might not be heard. I don't think we have anything like this in America, but I've seen Colbert or even South Park tossed around as loose analogues. Again, this is new to me too, but for me the bottom line is that censorship is always the tool of oppressors, no matter who happens to be wielding the power to do so.
