I did this about six months ago when I saw my gmail was near 100% full. I deleted everything that was big and a ton of other stuff that was mid-sized, but my inbox size only went down 3%. I eventually paid Google for more storage space.
I'm at 17% now but I am a real junk purger. I have an IMAP backup at the same time.
