This reminds me of something interesting I read in a history of the bicycle derailleur: Adoption of the bicycle in the U.S. lagged behind Europe by decades because somebody bought up the patents for bicycles and made the licensing fees too onerous for anybody to license profitably. There would be a good article in that if I had time to do the work on it.
