The town I grew up in was so small that you didn't even need to dial the exchange, just the last four digits of the phone number. I feel old every time I see a dead former pay phone fixture, stripped of its actual phone. Also, we had a rotary phone, and my last roommate's grandparents still had their party line until fairly recently, when the phone company discontinued the service. So many changes in such a short time.
