I was sitting here thinking how interesting that there aren't any people on here working for private companies. Then I actually read the map title. I wonder if any of these people would top their states if private companies (and non-profits) were included?

Fun fact... they're the only money makers in most college athletic programs. They're worth it... with out them, you'd never fund a water polo team or women's lacross.

@avacado it may not be. If it's a crap program, you're not going to sell as many foam fingers, hats or sweatshirts. While it may not be true in every situation, the best coaches /should/ generate the best programs and thereby the best revenue for the school

@ardgedee no, it goes to athletics, which for some students is how they can afford to attend. Even if not a single dime of athletics income goes to fund a scholarship it's worth having a great program (which usually means great coach) if it can fund all the other niche sports that would die without the funding. Also... in college football, TV contracts, particularly around bowl games are where the BIG money is at. If you want to make it to that level... it usually means a big $$ coach.

At its core, the angle on the original article/image is misleading since those coaches, in most situations, are running a program that is cash positive. It may be a "public" position, but its impact to the tax payer is ziltch.
