My mother reminded me of this awesome story that I kind of forgot really happened. I always thought maybe I made it up or imagined it or stole the memory from someone else.
I grew up just a few blocks from Patti Smith's store located in downtown Royal Oak, Michigan. We walked by it all the time but never really went in. I think we felt like we weren't worthy or something.
So one day when I was about 8 or 9, my mother and I were having a little stroll in town and as we approached the store, my mom said "Should we go see if she's there?" and, feeding off of the excitement of my mother, we giddily walked into the store.
I really didn't know who she was. I knew she was important. But I didn't really understand that she was PATTI SMITH. And I was just excited to meet someone else with my same last name. (Smith is my maiden name.)
So we walk in, the only customers in the place, and she was sitting at a table in the middle of the store, doing paperwork or something. I didn't know what I was supposed to do so I just walked right up to her. She looked at me and said hi. I said "My last name is Smith too". And she said, "well, we're sisters, then!"
She got up and tied a bandana around my head and walked me all around the store. She let me try on hats and jewelry and sunglasses. And asked me about my brother and sister and asked if I had any pets. She introduced me to the store dog (a silver, wrinkly, soft little guy). And she asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said "a singer". And she said "You will be a singer. I can tell."
