Early Chester Nez Painting
alt text
I found this painting on the street in Philadelphia 40 years after it was painted and 20 years before the artist finally received his diploma. Someone tossed it out with their garbage and I found it. I had no idea of the history behind it, but clearly it should never have been thrown away.
A few years later, when Google was born, I searched all the information I could from a label on the back. It turns out it was painted by an art student named Chester Nez in the early '50s. Chester is better known to history as a Navajo Code Talker. He attended art school in Kansas after the war on the GI Bill.
A fresh Google search told me he exhausted his GI Bill benefits before he was able to graduate. However, in 2012, University of Kansas "presented Nez with the degree he was working towards 60 years ago."
