"Freshmen are on campus" or "How not to lock up your bike"

I was going to leave a note but instead I went out to speak with the kid. He seemed receptive.
My recommendations:
- lock your front wheel.
- don't use a cable. Use NY chain if you need the length.
- get a commuter because bikes take a beating, especially when getting locked and unlocked all the time.
