As much as I loved George, even he had his blind spots. (Straight white male American- empathetic as he was, he didn't know everything about everybody's life.)
Often, when people proclaim "pride" in some group, trait, or persuasion it's because they've been told they should be ashamed of it. It's a "fuck you" gesture to the people who would have you hide what you are, assimilate, act like them, go away, whatever. It's a way for people to draw together, find out they're not alone, and give the finger to whatever power is trying to take away their identity or tell them they can't be part of society. Fuck you, I'm here, and I won't be ashamed. I'm proud.
I think GC was reacting to overt patriotism and nationalism here, which are in fact kinda silly, but defiant pride in who you are, especially when you're a despised minority, is never a bad thing.
