Right - but it's an ad that is based to sell a service that people want (because they are explicitly asking for it) rather than an ad that is used to gather data and repackage it for sale elsewhere. I think that's progress.
Also, where in the past have we seen geo-based apps involved in similar skirmishes? What lessons can we learn from the past? Yahoo! scooped up a bunch of mapping companies in 2005 or so - what happened to those? Will mapquest make a comeback?
