I love when Maria (my favorite, along with Gordon and Bob in this scene and as characters) is genuinely crying.
I was profoundly impacted by this episode as a child. Parents and children were supposed to watch it together. I watched it alone, like most children did. I remember lying to my parents when they asked me what was wrong. My reply, "Nothing."
I felt more adult after that, after knowing that I didn't want to, or have to, explain my feelings to people who did not exactly share them.
I think that is all the proof I need that Sesame Street is a very worthy teacher of children.
@mcmjolnir I also love that Sesame Street intentionally chose to be not in any way euphemistic, remain utterly secular, and teach children an atheistic lesson about death.
