Well, maybe she's saying the litany as she's on the dock/quay/whatever as she's remembering the past, instead of during all the abuse.

Also, some people just aren't strong enough to walk out after that first slap. It's sad, and frustrating, but hopefully they're able to work through their fear and indeed get out.
