They called me on the phone, explained that it was likely insects, explained their insect control procedure [they check the oats in Ireland and also have insect control procedures for their factory in the US where things are packaged] and said that based on the expiration date on the can (a few years ago) that was before they were importing the oats when the oats were actually getting packaged in Ireland.
So he said "yeah don't bother mailing us the can, okay if I send you a reimbursement for the cost of the oats plus tax?" and I said sure and I'll look for that in the mail. Not a bad outcome from my perspective and I was impressed with how well and quickly they handled things.
