@BoringPostcards - jeebus crust - TELL ME ABOUT IT!
basically, the deal was that we had just immigrated to the US from the USSR in 1979 (when I was 8 yrs old) and so my parents suddenly had access to all this cinema that they'd never been able to see before. They barely knew anybody else in town, so there was no one to babysit me (plus we were poor as churchmice) - so yeah, to the art-house I went.
Other movies they took me to see when I was probably waaaay too young include (but were not limited to)
-Seven Samurai (awesome swordfights but like 4 hrs long)
-Rashomon (not nearly enough swordfights)
-Man of Iron (Polish cinema verite - YAAAAAWN!)
However, by the time I was about 12 and started seeing films like Amarcord and Fannie and Alexander, I really started getting into it
of course now I think it's the bee's knees but still - WTF MOM???
