Menger sponge stencil
alt text
Spent the afternoon working this out in Inkscape, and then about ten minutes letting my Cricut actually cut thing out and another fifteen cleaning up some hanging bits and caaaaaarefully peeling the whole thing in stages off of the adhesive mat the machine uses to stabilizes cutting material.
The goal was to create a "three color" Menger sponge image that would work as a single cut-out or a single-color print/stencil, using varying line width and directional lines to convey a sense of shading, and to do it as a cohesive single shape so that there wouldn't be any islands of material that would have to be manually kept in place along with the larger piece.
It's about a square foot or so, and that's printed on some medium cardstock, which for the thin shapes involved in some of this really isn't sturdy enough to trust. I can feed thicker stuff into the machine and should try this on some thick card stock or thin poster board. But there's also a deep cut accessory blade that will purportedly handle thin sheet metal, leather, etc, and I think I'm gonna have to pick one up soon.
