Continuing to fuck around with oils; this afternoon tried a quick experiment revisiting my Menger sponge...

...as a little detail in oil. I've been tending to really scrape not enough paint over too much canvas with my paintings so partly this was an attempt to mix more than enough and get some goopy impasto action going. Which also seemed like a good idea (along with some muddled, streaky color mixing) to offset the flat nature of the design itself.

I mean, imagine a yappy little proto-me, without all the piles of rhetorical and punnish experience and various shades of adult darkness/cynicism, free-associating on a line drawing live in a class full of kids while the teacher encouraged us. I must have been (a) hella creative and (b) fairly insufferable.
In summary, this painting is about my childhood.

...this was the origin of the Zappa album cover. I was going to write a MeFi FPP about Droodles (which were a staple of my childhood, and a book of which @jessamyn bought me for my birthday) but there wasn't enough source material on the web at the time.
