This kind of vocabulary is the hardest part about learning a foreign language. I gave up reading L'oeuvre au noir by Yourcenar because of all the medieval french terminology similar to muntin and dormer.
@joost Yeah and some of these words are basically foreign even to me and I grew up not that far from here. Entablature, dentin, muntin, stringer I basically don't know in a house context at all.
@jessamyn I'm sorry but the South End and Southie are two different neighborhoods and Southie does not have the South End style of brownstones beyond a few examples.
@joost that is why they have visual dictionaries....imagine trying to talk to an auto mechanic, say, in a foreign language, about all the fiddly little parts of an engine
@BennyTheIcepick You too? The future long hours/PITA clients/relatively low pay also hastened my exit. One of many, many reasons I respect the hell out of Lady Whorfin who is now 19 years in the biz and the senior non-partner at her firm (which does *amazing* residential work).
I've been on the periphery of the industry for the past ten years, doing planning and programming work, so it was not entirely for naught, but the most useful skills I developed were related more to graphic design than to architecture itself. That and making fun of architecture.
Impressive. Good on her.
