This is the time when we'll look back and recognize our friendships and the basis for them changed completely. First they expanded, then they shrank. I suppose, in a while, they'll stabilize. And they'll reflect our value system and worth and the way we look at the world.
@BennyTheIcepick I think that one's OK because you aren't trying to pretend you are better than the sign writer — on the contrary.
@infini I think that is a phenomenon of density as old as cities. The electronic interface just made the "cities" bigger and removed some of the cues we use to reject people in person.
I work as an editor, and after my decades of experience cleaning up other people's writing, I am pretty sure the only job for which "good spelling" is a reliable indicator of competence is ... being an editor.
Yes, yes, that's right @localstain, I'm a terrible person for suggesting that someone that wants $15 per hour should be able to spell the name of the product they're selling. Damn, I'm a Bitch! But you really let me have it. Thanks for putting me in my place. I really learned a lesson here. One more thing though...you've got what?
You spit into the wind in this thread and I just wanted to make sure you got a big fucking loogie in your your eye.
Since you seem incapable of following even simple instructions, i.e. don't be a cunt, I'm not going to get into all of the reasons why someone working for less than a living wage may not have gotten the most out of our education system. What I will say is that it should not require an education beyond the ability to know you are getting fucked to stand up and demand a living wage.
That's what this is about, a living wage, not a higher minimum.
Every person in this country deserves a living wage for an honest day's work and it shouldn't have anything to do with whether or not you can spell fries. It should be commensurate to the value that you bring the company, any company, I don't think that's too much to ask.
So I'll tell you what you can do, you can go fuck yourself.
@jlinsmith would someone who didn't misspell fries on this sign be able to sell you big mac any better than the person that did? how often do you think they're actually required to write anything at their job at all? is it possible that english wasn't the author's first language? what if whoever wrote this was doing so at the end of their shift after already putting in a full shift at their other job? there's so many reasons why a spelling mistake should not make anyone ineligible for a living wage.
2 cents in internet debate currency incoming: i'm mostly in the middle of the issue, i'm all for living standard of minimum wage, but i also think if that's not achievable, there should be equal playing ground. Auto plant worker should not get $50/hr just for holding a screwdriver and a construction worker should not get $30/hr for holding a stop sign. a well known argument that it also depends on location since living expense varies with city/state. it would be nice if apartment in NYC cost the same as apartment in the middle of rural Texas. Federal government doesn't seem to control that price variation.
@sean, No, that person would not do a better job of selling me a Big Mac. The person who wrote this is not my point here. It's the idea that working at a place like McDonalds should guarantee me a living wage" because I want it or because you think I should have it, but not because I am performing a task that warrants that level of pay. It's the idea that I can be an illiterate and potentially make the same wage as a person who has put themself through school.
@jlinsmith You seem like an idiot, are you an idiot..?
I will say you must be some kinda epic troll because everyone in this thread is on the other side of your argument and you keep coming back to double down.
Why even bother..?
For the record I'm not angry, not any more so than usual, I'm fucking peachy. But boy I bet you'd kick the bowl out of hungry man's hands simply because he misspelled "Wil werk for fud"...
But I digress...
"The person who wrote this is not my point here."
Then why join the conversation except to stir up shit..?
"It's the idea that working at a place like McDonalds should guarantee me a living wage"
Working at any job that produces profits for the owners/shareholders should pay a living wage. That's a pretty simple equation. If they can't do that they shouldn't be in business to begin with. A living wage so that their bottom line isn't subsidized by my tax dollars because their employees are forced to collect welfare or medicaid benefits.
If McD's/Walmart et al were skating by on razor thin margins I could understand and perhaps even support less than market wages but they are not, McDonalds made a Billion dollars last year. With a B. Walmart made almost 13. They can easily afford to take better care of their employees and don't.
@LocalStain So if I don't agree with you I should just shut up? Nothing like a respectful dialogue huh? Contrary to your assertion, I'm happy to help those in need. Those who, through no fault of their own, have ended up in need. You seem to be laboring under the impression that McDonalds and Walmart are just going to suck it up and pay these underskilled people what a skilled worker might make. Then those skilled workers will have their wages increased and so on. It doesn't quite work that way though Mr. Stain. They don't choose to just make fewer profits, they lay people off and they increase the prices of their products, which then takes away all of the increase in wages, Mr. Frise just "earned". But my opinion doesn't mean much, after all I disagree with you so I MUST be an idiot. In the future, I'll make sure to steer clear of your posts and comments. Or not.
@jlinsmith Actually it's not just me you who seems to disagree with you, if it were I'd have given up, but you are on the shit end of a losing argument with everyone in this thread no matter how you slice it. You didn't come in to this thread to have a respectful dialog you came in here to stir up shit.
So that what you get, shit.
Your opinion is shit and has absolutely fuck all to do with the subject at hand. You said so yourself. I'm pretty sure you didn't even read your last bit before you hit "post" because nothing you said even makes much sense.
"They don't choose to just make fewer profits, they lay people off and they increase the prices of their products, which then takes away all of the increase in wages, Mr. Frise just "earned". But my opinion doesn't mean much, after all I disagree with you so I MUST be an idiot."
This alone proves my point. You're a fucking idiot and your opinions are shit.
You rolled into a conversation that others were having with an opinion that was counter to the entire thread and didn't expect any blow back, from anyone...? That makes you a troll, and not a very good one at that. When I said don't be a cunt you doubled down and continued to express an opinion that others, not just me, disagree with, for good reason, and didn't expect to get any shit..?
Fuck you. I hope you avoid my comments and threads. I've been an active and beneficial, member of this community for more than 4 years, not to mention a paid subscriber, and you haven't so much as posted a single fucking picture but you roll in here thinking your shit don't stink. I usually don't ever get this deep into shit like this but this seems to me like a worthy cause if for no other reason than you are so full of shit it would be fun to watch it spill out, and I have.
You're a fucking troll, and an idiot, and a cunt and your opinions are shit I really don't fucking care enough about this anymore to continue.
I hope the next time you go to a fast food restaurant someone spits in your food and you get a flat tire.
@jlinsmith I mean, it's ok to disagree about things here (and it's ok to ask people not to be rude), but realize that what we're disagreeing about is the expectation that a person can earn a living wage. It's just mean to mock those with less privilege. Like, it's ok if your politics sway toward the Mr. Burns end of the spectrum, but you can't really expect other people to have patience with punching down.
@jlinsmith point being that there are a shit-ton of people that can't spell. It's just that some of us have the luxury of a spell checker in front of us.
I will ask why you don't fell that someone that works for a living shouldn't be expected to earn a living wage? This is exactly what workers have fought for throughout time. And still do today.
The only valid argument against living wages is if you own McDonalds or Wal-Mart and, god damn it, you want to buy another yacht this year. And if that's the case, good for you. But if you're falling short on your yacht payments, you should realize you're a whole lot closer socio-economically to the people that fight for living wages that people who fight against it.
I think if a task is important enough to need forty hours of work assigned to it every week then it's important enough to warrant a living wage be paid to have said work done. It doesn't matter if that task is flipping burgers. It *SHOULDN'T* matter. If you, as a business owner, believe it's important enough to be done then it's important enough for the person doing it to be able to live like a human being.
Wow, such resentment over what is likely the result of dyslexia or speaking English as a second (or third or fourth) language.
I don't wish more bullshit on to people who are already struggling. Kind of a running over drowning people with your jet ski maneuver. HEY FUCKERS, BUT YOU WISH YOU HAD A JET SKI.
The irony in someone trying to pass themselves off as seemingly intelligent and superior by arguing that a person should be able to spell in order to earn a decent wage at a job that requires low literacy skills.... Christ, what an asshole!
@BennyTheIcepick Oddly enough the most I've ever seen of TPB is in meme form on the reddits. I'm told it's highly entertaining I've just not gotten around to watching it yet.
@LocalStain
I'm probably going to cause even more of a furor than jlinsmith for saying this, but to me it's the kind of TV show that's best in clip form rather than trying to digest full, plodding episodes. Compilations like that above of various characters' quirks are what make the show great to me.
That said, this is to me the quintessential TPB clip that gives a good overview of each character: https://www.youtube.com/watch...
With that in mind one of my favorite features of the Internet in general is its ability to distill. Sometimes for the worse but mostly it does a pretty good job of summarizing complex cultural touchstones. That's not to say TBP is a complex cultural touchstone, simply that it benefits from being distilled.

I actually agree, can't watch whole episodes
