FFU (especially if you're a lady on twitter)
"I'm being condescending. That means I'm talking down to you."
The @replies prove the need.
@jessamyn I really really hope they're all just being sarcastic
@travis I'm sure they are, but that's the thing, it's only sort of funny when women have to deal with the real thing all the time. It's like "ironic" racism, there's no humor to it if you're using it around people who have to deal with real racist comments on the regular. And these guys are acting like they get it, but they don't get it.
@jessamyn yeah, I guess sarcasm isn't any better in that case. I can't even tell the difference between deliberate assholes and harmfully ignorant people any more.
@travis I very much understand the dismay too, and the assholes are the ones that benefit from the "can't tell if kidding or serious" problem. With my close friends I can still engage in more "free form" grabassery like those silly comments because we know each other and there's a richer context for what our words mean. And maybe some of those dudes are Kate's friends and maybe it's all OK, but in the rarefied context of Twitter (and RTs and posting images on the SHK and etc) you can't know, so it gets weird and muddied. But I can also be a "that's not funny' pill sometimes much more than others so I may not be the best moral compass. :)
