@Katzenkoenig it is.. but abacaxi is slightly different from ananas. we too, in Portugal, have it.. in fact we have both abacaxi (planted/grown in Azzores) and Pineaple. Abacaxi - less acid and sweeter Ananas (pineaple) - more acid and less sweeter
@danelectro the name comes from the old tupi/guarani indian language word "naná". and the first ever mention to it was made by the portuguese explorers returning from Brazil in the early XVI century. so I'd say it was the portuguese to bring the fruit from accross the ocean .. and we still call it Ananás. and it makes sense as south America was first discovered by the portuguese, way earlier than Colombus.
