New York City, 1980
“We were at the Bottom Line and it was a great, great venue. They wanted to see if I could go backstage and get a shot. That was like, 'Oh my god, please no,' because I was really shy. Now I had to ask permission, like shit! I quietly walked behind the stage, tapped on the door, and there was a big guy at the door, and he was like, 'He doesn’t do that,' so I said, 'OK, thank you!' I was so glad, and I rushed back. The music was about to start and I got a tap on my hand and the guy signaled me to walk backstage, and he said to go ahead in and take a few pictures. At that point [it] wasn’t digital, and I barely knew how to use my on-camera flash. It was just the two of us in this little, teeny weeny room."
