A quick search says this is a sit-in at the Cherrydale Drug Mart, Arlington, VA, 1960.
Arlington is far from the deep rural south -- it's basically Washington, DC.

@bug138 You say that, but even then, politics were decidedly Southern-minded, even that far up north. Virginia was solidly Democratic - back when the Democrats were wearing the other hat - all the way up until the mid-70's, when the northern Virginia suburbs started growing.
There's a solid chance that most of the people in this photo are still alive. I would *love* to see each of them interviewed about their role in the shot. Did the thuggish dudes go on to feel some level of remorse about things?
