Low-fat milk is a persistent mainstream nutritional guidelines recommendation — based on the claim that saturated fat is inherently bad at least as much as the calorie issue (although full-fat milk doesn't have that much more calories than low-fat or skim). It'll take a while for that to shake out.
I'm a skim drinker and sometimes I wonder if I should just put protein water on my cereal. I had a discussion with someone the other day who was shocked that a pumkpin spice latte had 380 calories. As if it wasn't basically junk food. People's ideas about nutrition are really interesting. I'm sure I have weird ones f my own.
Sure, but the skim milk thing isn't just "people's ideas about nutrition." It's mainstream government guidance supposedly based on (but, at the time it was devised, running ahead of) health research. Now it's entrenched in spite of pretty strong hints that it was too simplistic, and in the face of clear evidence that the "low fat" guidance led the food industry to flood the market with added-sugar foods.
Anyway, skim milk IS "protein water" (with sugar), so you're already on it. :)
Also, I'm not ready to dismiss the (non-skim) pumpkin spice latte. It is better than a liter of Orange Crush (roughly the same cals), because it's got some protein and fat in it, for nutrition and satiety. Are there more healthful choices? Sure, but PSL is a pretty decent junk choice. And it's relatively expensive, so if you make that choice consistently, it probably has an additional overall intake-limiting effect that vastly cheaper, much less dense options evade.
I'm lactose intolerant, so I wouldn't drink milk anyway, but I found soy and almond milks to be great low-fat/low-cal substitute for milk in nearly everything; cooking, baking, smoothies, cereal... They also last relatively forever compared to milk which is a nice upside.
same as @dad i drink whole milk and it's a race against the expiration date. Coffee at work I use real half-and-half. Couple of tablespoons a day is fine.
These ads were some of my favorites when we lived in NYC. And as far as milk goes, I only drink raw milk. I don't understand why you wouldn't if you have the choice, both for nutritional value and taste, but also because raw milk can be easily digested by many people who can't digest pasteurized dairy products.
