@chadlavi Well, there are Olympic events in gun-shooting, but none for cheerleading. That particular opinion has a lot of consensus and a lot of history behind it. I'm not part of that consensus, but I never get to participate in these kinds of surveys either.
I'm curious who they surveyed, because most Americans I've lived among only vaguely know what lacrosse is and are unlikely to have an opinion on whether it's a sport, and they'd put stock car racing above a hell of a lot of other things.
Cheerleading is a really interesting case, because it has changed wildly fairly recently to be a very demanding mix of dance and gymnastics (that puts girls at tremendous risk of injury — in an environment so dismissive of its rigor that they are really really *screwed* when they do get hurt). So, yeah, it's sexist all the way down.
