Using a construction technique suggested by @freqout, I was able to significantly streamline my Mun landing vessel (it's got 13 fewer liquid fuel tanks).

I ended up going with 6 landing legs; in the three earlier versions, one leg would break off upon landing, then after a few moments, it would explode as if it were manufactured by Michael Bay.
